Updated
In short: Couch Lag has no accounts, sets no cookies of its own and shows no ads. Visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookieless and reports only aggregate totals. Couch Lag never receives what you type into the app.
The app (/app/)
- The app runs entirely in your browser. It has no accounts, and it never sends anything about your setup, settings, answers, logs or readings anywhere.
- Your progress is saved only in your browser’s local storage (localStorage) for couchlag.com. It stays on that device and in that browser. Other sites can’t read it, and Couch Lag never receives it.
- Exports (the JSON, CSV and text files, including the redacted support report) are created in your browser and saved to your device. Nothing is uploaded. The support report tries to hide emails, IP addresses, file paths and web links, but it can miss things such as names or PC names, so read it before you share it.
- You can clear all saved progress from inside the app at any time, or by clearing site data for couchlag.com in your browser.
- Links from guides can pre-fill the app using the part of the address after “#” (for example your device). The app reads it and removes it from the address bar as soon as it opens, before the analytics script runs, so those choices aren’t part of the page address that gets counted.
- The app never shows ads or a consent banner, even when guide pages show ads. Its security policy allows only its own files and Cloudflare’s Web Analytics script, and blocks everything else.
Cookies and ads
- Couch Lag sets no cookies, and Cloudflare Web Analytics doesn’t use any. The only thing Couch Lag stores on your device is the app’s saved progress in local storage, described above.
- There are no ads and no ad or tracking scripts. Pages load no remote fonts or images, and apart from Cloudflare’s Web Analytics script the site’s security policy blocks scripts from other sites.
- If ads are ever added, they will appear only on guide pages, never in the app. This page will be rewritten before they go live to explain the cookies involved, and visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland will be asked for consent first through a certified consent tool.
Analytics: Cloudflare Web Analytics
- Couch Lag uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many people visit, which pages they read, where visits come from and how fast pages load. Cloudflare adds its small script (from static.cloudflareinsights.com) to every page, including the app.
- It is cookieless: it sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. It measures page loads with your browser’s standard timing data and sends a short report to Cloudflare about the page you loaded.
- Couch Lag sees only aggregate totals, such as page views, top pages, referring sites, countries, browsers and load times, never a list of individual visitors. Cloudflare says Web Analytics doesn’t collect or use visitors’ personal data and doesn’t track individual people across websites. It builds no profile of you and isn’t used for ads.
- It doesn’t read the page’s content, so it never sees your answers, setup, settings, logs or exports in the app.
- If you block static.cloudflareinsights.com with a content blocker, nothing on the site stops working. Cloudflare describes what it collects in Web Analytics data collection.
Hosting, Cloudflare and connection logs
Couch Lag is served by Cloudflare. Like any website, when your browser loads a page, Cloudflare receives standard connection details such as your IP address, browser user agent, the page requested and the time. Cloudflare uses them to deliver the site and protect it from abuse (for example, filtering attack traffic), and may keep them in short-term logs. If Cloudflare needs to check for automated traffic, it may set a strictly necessary security cookie. Cloudflare Web Analytics, described above, is the only analytics Couch Lag uses. Cloudflare’s handling is described in the Cloudflare privacy policy.
Google Search Console
Couch Lag uses Google Search Console to submit its sitemap and see how its pages appear in Google Search results, such as which searches showed a page. That report comes from Google Search’s own data. Search Console adds nothing to these pages and places nothing on your device.
If you email Couch Lag
If you write to the contact address, the message and your email address are used only to reply and to fix whatever you reported. They aren’t added to any mailing list or shared. Please don’t send logs or exports that contain personal details. Use the app’s redacted support report instead and check it first.
Links to other sites
Guides link to official documentation and other sites, which have their own privacy policies. Links open only when you click them, and Couch Lag asks your browser not to send them the page you came from.
Children
Couch Lag isn’t aimed at children under 13 and doesn’t knowingly collect information from them.
